Yellowroot (Xanthorhiza simplicissima)

Yellowroot (Xanthorhiza simplicissima) is a low-growing, native deciduous shrub valued for its finely textured foliage, deep purple spring flowers, and brilliant golden fall color. Also known as Shrub Yellowroot, this adaptable species forms attractive colonies and is especially useful for naturalizing shady, moist woodland areas.

Distinctive Features

This stoloniferous shrub typically grows 1 to 3 feet tall and spreads to form dense colonies via underground stems. Its delicate, fern-like leaves emerge early in spring and turn a vibrant yellow in autumn. Small star-shaped purple-brown flowers appear in clusters before the foliage fully expands, adding subtle early-season interest. Its roots contain a natural yellow dye, giving the plant its common name.

Growing Conditions

  • Sun Exposure: Partial shade to full shade
  • Soil Type: Moist, well-drained soil; tolerates clay
  • Soil pH: Acidic to neutral
  • Water Needs: Moderate to high; prefers consistently moist soil
  • USDA Hardiness Zones: 3 to 9

Ideal Uses

  • Groundcover for shaded woodland gardens
  • Focal point in native or naturalized settings
  • Moist slopes or streambanks with erosion concerns
  • Underplanting for larger shrubs and trees
  • Low-maintenance mass plantings in shade

Low Maintenance Care

  • Cut back old stems in early spring to maintain appearance
  • Mulch to conserve moisture and suppress weeds
  • Water during prolonged dry spells
  • Divide clumps if spreading becomes too aggressive
  • Generally pest and disease resistant

Why Choose Yellowroot

  • Native groundcover that thrives in deep shade
  • Unique early purple flowers and vibrant fall foliage
  • Spreads gently to fill difficult garden areas
  • Low-growing habit complements taller woodland plants
  • An understated focal point for naturalistic plantings

Yellowroot offers multi-season interest, adaptability, and native reliability, making it a practical and attractive focal point or groundcover for shaded, moisture-retentive landscapes.
