Bluebeard (Caryopteris)

Caryopteris, commonly called Bluebeard, is a late season flowering shrub group valued for its blue blooms, aromatic foliage, and the way it brings fresh color to the garden when many shrubs are finished. Our Bluebeard collection includes compact mounders for foundations and front borders, as well as slightly larger forms that work as low hedges and filler shrubs in mixed beds. Flowers open in late summer into fall, drawing bees and butterflies at peak season, and the gray green foliage adds a clean, coastal toned texture that pairs well with ornamental grasses, coneflowers, sedum, and other drought tolerant perennials. Caryopteris performs best in full sun with well drained soil, handles heat and short dry spells once established, and responds well to a hard cutback in early spring to encourage dense new growth and heavy bloom.
