Bluebeard
Caryopteris, commonly called bluebeard or blue mist spirea, delivers late summer to fall color with nectar rich blue flowers that draw bees and butterflies when many shrubs are winding down. Plants thrive in full sun and well drained soil, show good drought tolerance once established, and are typically deer resistant. Cut back hard in early spring to encourage dense, fresh growth, avoid overly rich soils, and pinch young stems once or twice to keep plants compact. Use compact varieties for edging and containers, mass mid size selections for low maintenance color in mixed borders, or place one near a patio as a small focal point, and pair with coneflower, ornamental grasses, and sedum for a long, layered season.
