Epimedium
Epimedium, commonly called barrenwort, brings delicate spring flowers above heart shaped leaves that stay handsome through the season, often evergreen in mild climates and flushed with copper or red on new growth. These long lived perennials excel in dry shade once established, thriving under trees and along woodland edges in humus rich, well drained soil. Mulch to keep roots cool, water to establish, and avoid heavy disturbance, since clumps spread slowly by rhizomes. Most selections are reliably deer and rabbit resistant and make superb, weed suppressing groundcovers that knit neatly between stepping stones and at path edges. Use compact forms as living mulch beneath shrubs, set showy variegated or bronze new growth types where foliage can be appreciated up close, or feature a single clump near a patio or entry as a subtle focal point with refined texture.
