Pulmonaria

Pulmonaria, commonly called lungwort, is a shade loving perennial valued for its early spring flowers and distinctive, often silver spotted foliage. Our Pulmonaria collection includes compact clumping forms that edge shady paths and beds, as well as slightly larger varieties that knit together under trees, shrubs, and along woodland borders. Clusters of tubular blooms in pink, blue, or shifting bicolors appear early in the season, providing nectar for pollinators when little else is in flower, while the foliage continues to carry the planting with cool tones and speckled patterns through the rest of the growing year. Thriving in partial to full shade with moist, well drained soil, lungwort is a natural fit for woodland gardens, north and east facing foundations, and mixed shade borders with hosta, ferns, and hellebore. Use it to carpet the front of beds, soften hard edges, or create a subtle focal point near paths and seating where the leaf pattern and early blooms can be appreciated up close.
