Tussock Sedge
Tussock Sedge (Carex stricta) is a native perennial sedge known for its distinctive tufted growth habit and its preference for moist or wet habitats. This sedge typically forms dense clumps of grass-like tufts, reaching a height of about 24 to 36 inches. Its stem is triangular and solid, distinguishing it from many other sedges. The leaves are narrow and often have a bluish-green hue. In late spring to early summer, Tussock Sedge produces small, inconspicuous flowers held on tall stems above the foliage. Although the flowers themselves are not the main ornamental feature, they contribute to its overall charm. Tussock Sedge is commonly found in wetlands, along stream banks, and in other areas with consistent moisture. Due to its tolerance for wet conditions, it's excellent for stabilizing soil in riparian areas or rain gardens. Gardeners seeking to add a native grass-like element to their landscapes, especially in areas with ample moisture, will find Tussock Sedge to be a valuable addition.
