Aucuba japonica 'Serratifolia', also known as Sawtoothed Japanese Aucuba is a slow-growing evergreen shrub native to Japan. It's cultivated as an ornamental plant due to its attractive foliage and tolerance for shade. Leaves are oval-shaped, dark green, and glossy, with a distinctive yellow or gold variegation along the edges. Serrated, or toothed, edges give rise to the common name "serratifolia". Grows to a height of 4-6 feet with a similar spread. In late winter to early spring it produces small, purple flowers. The female variety produce red berries in the fall, which are toxic to humans but attractive to birds. Thrives in well-draining soil and partial to full shade, making it a good choice for planting under trees or in shady areas of the garden.
