Sassafras (Sassafras albidum)

Sassafras (Sassafras albidum), also known as Common Sassafras or White Sassafras, is a deciduous native tree known for its aromatic leaves and roots, unique mitten-shaped foliage, and vivid fall color. Valued for its cultural, culinary, and ornamental appeal, this multi-season tree brings texture, fragrance, and vibrant color to naturalized landscapes and native plant gardens.

Distinctive Features

This medium-sized tree typically matures to 30 to 60 feet tall with a pyramidal to irregular crown. Leaves occur in three shapesoval, mitten, and three-lobedoften on the same branch. In fall, foliage turns striking shades of yellow, orange, red, and purple. Small yellow flowers appear in early spring before the leaves, followed by dark blue fruits on red stalks (on female trees) that attract birds. The bark, twigs, and roots are aromatic when crushed, historically used for teas and flavoring.
