Snowball Viburnum (Viburnum opulus 'Roseum')

Snowball Viburnum (Viburnum opulus 'Roseum'), also known as European Snowball Bush or Common Snowball, is a striking flowering shrub admired for its dramatic globe-shaped blooms and upright form. Its classic, old-fashioned charm makes it a reliable focal point in spring landscapes and mixed shrub borders.

Distinctive Features

This deciduous shrub grows 8 to 12 feet tall and wide with a rounded, upright habit. In mid to late spring, it produces masses of large, sterile, snowball-like flower clusters that start apple green and mature to pure white. Its deeply lobed foliage resembles maple leaves and turns shades of red and burgundy in fall. Unlike the species, 'Roseum' does not produce fruit.

Growing Conditions

  • Sun Exposure: Full sun to partial shade
  • Soil Type: Moist, well-drained soils
  • Soil pH: Adaptable, prefers slightly acidic to neutral
  • Water Needs: Moderate, more during dry spells
  • USDA Hardiness Zones: 3 to 8

Ideal Uses

  • Foundation plantings and shrub borders
  • Backdrops in mixed perennial beds

Low Maintenance Care

  • Prune after flowering to shape or rejuvenate
  • Mulch to conserve moisture and suppress weeds
  • Water deeply during dry spells, especially in summer
  • Fertilize in early spring with a balanced fertilizer
  • Monitor for aphids or powdery mildew in humid conditions
