Prairie Sky Hosta (Hosta 'Prairie Sky')

Prairie Sky Hosta (Hosta 'Prairie Sky') is a medium-sized shade perennial prized for its powdery blue foliage and elegant form. One of the truest blue hostas available, it brings cool-toned contrast and refined texture to shaded borders, woodland gardens, and container plantings.

Distinctive Features

Growing 14 to 18 inches tall and 30 to 36 inches wide, Prairie Sky forms a dense mound of heart-shaped, heavily textured leaves in a soft, powder blue. The foliage holds its color well through summer, especially in deep to partial shade. In midsummer, pale lavender flowers rise above the mound on slender scapes, adding vertical interest and attracting pollinators.

Growing Conditions

  • Sun Exposure: Partial to full shade; avoid direct afternoon sun
  • Soil Type: Moist, rich, well-drained soil
  • Soil pH: Slightly acidic to neutral
  • Water Needs: Moderate to high; prefers consistent moisture
  • USDA Hardiness Zones: 3 to 9

Ideal Uses

  • Focal point in woodland or shade gardens
  • Mass planting for cool-toned groundcover
  • Mixed hosta beds for textural contrast
  • Foundation plantings with dappled light
  • Containers for shaded patios and entryways

Low Maintenance Care

  • Water deeply during dry periods, especially in heat
  • Mulch to conserve moisture and cool the root zone
  • Cut back dead foliage in late fall or early spring
  • Divide clumps every 3 to 5 years to maintain vigor
  • Monitor for slugs in wet, humid conditions
