Pitch Pine
Pitch Pine (Pinus rigida)
Pitch Pine (Pinus rigida) is a rugged, native evergreen conifer known for its adaptability, fire-resistance, and picturesque form. With irregular branching and deeply furrowed bark, it brings a wild, natural character to the landscape. This species thrives in poor soils and challenging environments, making it an excellent choice for ecological restoration and naturalized plantings.
Distinctive Features
Pitch Pine typically grows 30 to 60 feet tall and 20 to 30 feet wide, though it may remain much smaller in harsh conditions. Its dark green needles are arranged in bundles of three and can appear tufted or irregular. Mature trees often exhibit twisted limbs and gnarled trunks, especially in exposed coastal or upland sites. Epicormic shootsneedles sprouting directly from barkare common and help the tree regenerate after fire or injury.
