Pitch Pine
Pitch Pine (Pinus rigida) is a rugged and distinctive pine tree native to eastern North America. Characterized by its irregular shape and rough, deeply furrowed bark, this pine species is adapted to a variety of harsh environmental conditions. The needles of the Pitch Pine are clustered in bundles of three, and they typically range from 3 to 5 inches in length. The cones are small, about 1.5 to 3 inches long, and tend to persist on the tree for several years. One of the unique features of the Pitch Pine is its ability to resprout from its trunk or branches, even after being damaged or burned. This resilience makes it well-suited for areas prone to wildfires. It thrives in sandy or rocky soils and is often found in coastal plains, sand dunes, and dry, rocky slopes. The Pitch Pine plays a vital role in the ecosystem, providing habitat and food for various wildlife species.
