Oregon Grape
Oregon Grape (Mahonia aquifolium), also known as tall Oregon grape, is an evergreen shrub native to western North America. It's a member of the Berberidaceae family and is prized for its ornamental and medicinal properties. This shrub typically reaches a height of 3 to 6 feet. The leaves of Oregon Grape are holly-like in appearance, pinnately compound, and often have a glossy texture. They are green and may turn reddish or purplish in winter. In the spring, it produces clusters of yellow flowers that resemble small grape clusters, followed by dark blue to black berries in the summer. The berries are edible and can be used to make jams and jellies. Apart from its ornamental value, Oregon Grape has traditional medicinal uses. The roots and bark contain berberine, a compound with potential antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. It's a versatile plant, suitable for various landscape uses, including hedges, borders, and as an understory plant in woodland gardens. Additionally, it's attractive to pollinators and provides food and shelter for birds.
