Title:

Gro-Low Fragrant Sumac (Rhus aromatica 'Gro-Low')

Gro-Low Fragrant Sumac (Rhus aromatica 'Gro-Low') is a low-growing, spreading deciduous shrub also known as Gro-Low Sumac. Known for its dense, horizontal form and ability to thrive in tough conditions, it serves as a durable groundcover with exceptional fall color and wildlife value. Its adaptability makes it a go-to solution for erosion control, banks, and large-scale naturalistic plantings.

Distinctive Features

This cultivar grows 2 to 3 feet tall but spreads up to 6 to 8 feet wide, creating a thick, mounded carpet of foliage. The trifoliate leaves resemble those of poison ivy but are completely harmless. In fall, the foliage turns vivid shades of red, orange, and burgundy. Small yellow flowers appear in early spring and are followed by red berries that attract birds and wildlife.

Growing Conditions

  • Sun Exposure: Full sun to partial shade
  • Soil Type: Average, well-drained soils; tolerates poor, dry, or rocky soil
  • Soil pH: Adaptable
  • Water Needs: Low once established
  • USDA Hardiness Zones: 3 to 9
