Chinese Elm (Ulmus parvifolia)

Chinese Elm (Ulmus parvifolia) is a highly adaptable deciduous to semi-evergreen tree valued for its graceful form, exfoliating bark, and exceptional resistance to Dutch elm disease. Also known as Lacebark Elm, this species is a favorite for urban planting thanks to its toughness, fast growth, and attractive appearance year-round.

Distinctive Features

Chinese Elm typically grows 40 to 60 feet tall with a broad, arching canopy and smooth bark that peels away to reveal mottled patterns in gray, orange, and brown. Its small, leathery green leaves are serrated and turn yellow to reddish-purple in fall. In warm climates, it may retain leaves into winter.
