Bunchberry
Bunchberry (Cornus canadensis) is a charming perennial plant that is native to North America and belongs to the dogwood family. This low-growing groundcover is known for its unique appearance and delicate beauty. Bunchberry features a carpet of glossy green leaves that form a dense mat, creating an attractive backdrop for the star of the show the clusters of small, white flowers that emerge in spring. These flowers are actually bracts, similar to those found on dogwood trees, surrounding a central cluster of tiny yellowish-green flowers. As the flowers fade, they give way to bright red berries that persist throughout the summer, providing a pop of color to the landscape. These berries are also a valuable food source for birds and other wildlife. Bunchberry thrives in moist, well-drained soil and prefers shady to partially shaded areas, making it a perfect choice for woodland gardens, shaded borders, or naturalized areas. With its unique flowers, attractive foliage, and wildlife-friendly features, Bunchberry adds a touch of natural beauty to any garden or landscape setting.
