Accolade Elm (Ulmus 'Morton')

Accolade Elm is a hardy, disease-tolerant shade tree with a graceful, classic elm form featuring an upright vase shape and arching limbs. Glossy dark green foliage casts broad, cooling shade and turns yellow in fall, making a reliable anchor for streetscapes and large landscapes.

Distinctive Features

Bred for strong resistance to Dutch elm disease with excellent tolerance of urban stresses, wind, and cold. Uniform branching and a high canopy echo the look of American elm while offering modern durability.

Growing Conditions

  • Sun Exposure: Full sun for best canopy density and form.
  • Soil: Adaptable to a wide range of well drained soils; prefers slightly acidic to neutral conditions.
  • Water: Moderate; keep evenly moist during establishment, then water deeply in extended dry spells.
  • USDA Hardiness Zones: 4 to 9.
  • Mature Size: Typically 50 to 60 ft tall and 40 to 50 ft wide.

Ideal Uses

  • Focal Point: Iconic vase-shaped canopy provides architectural structure and generous shade.
  • Shade Tree: Cools lawns, play areas, and patios with a high, spreading crown.
  • Street Tree: Performs along sidewalks and medians with good urban tolerance.
  • Allees and Drives: Arches elegantly when planted in rows to frame entries.
  • Parks and Campuses: Reliable large-scale shade for open greens and gathering spaces.

Low Maintenance Care

  • Watering: Water weekly the first 2 to 3 years; reduce to occasional deep soaks during drought.
  • Pruning: Train early for strong central leadership and good clearance; prune in late winter to remove dead or crossing wood.
  • Fertilizing: Feed in early spring only if soil tests indicate deficiency.
  • Mulching: Maintain a 2 to 3 inch mulch ring to conserve moisture and protect roots, keeping mulch off the trunk.
  • Notes: Monitor for insects typical of elms; overall cultivar shows strong Dutch elm disease resistance.

Why Choose Accolade Elm?

  • Disease Resistance: Bred for resilience against Dutch elm disease.
  • Classic Elm Silhouette: Upright vase form with arching branches.
  • Urban Toughness: Handles heat, wind, and city soils better than many shade trees.
  • Fast Establishment: Builds canopy quickly with proper watering and training.
  • Long-Term Value: Durable structure and broad shade enhance property and comfort.

Plant in full sun with room to develop its canopy, water deeply during establishment, and shape early for a strong, long-lived street or lawn tree.
