Frontenac Grape (Vitis x 'Frontenac')

Frontenac Grape (Vitis x 'Frontenac') is a cold-hardy, disease-resistant hybrid developed by the University of Minnesota. Known for its deep purple fruit and high sugar content, this versatile variety is widely used in red wines, ross, and port-style blends. It performs exceptionally well in northern climates, making it ideal for backyard vineyards and cold-region growers.

Distinctive Features

Frontenac produces small to medium clusters of dark blue-black grapes with high acidity and bold flavor. The vines are extremely vigorous, reaching 10 to 15 feet or more when trained properly. Its foliage is dense and attractive, with lobed green leaves that turn shades of red and orange in fall. The fruit ripens in late summer and is prized for producing wines with cherry, currant, and chocolate notes.

Growing Conditions

  • Sun Exposure: Full sun
  • Soil Type: Well-drained loamy or sandy soils
  • Soil pH: Slightly acidic to neutral
  • Water Needs: Moderate; consistent moisture during fruit set is ideal
  • USDA Hardiness Zones: 3 to 8

Ideal Uses

  • Focal point vine in cold-climate vineyards or edible gardens
  • Red wine production with rich, full-bodied flavor
  • Ros or dessert wine crafting at home
  • Trellises, arbors, or fencing for ornamental cover
  • Demonstration vineyards or educational landscapes

Low Maintenance Care

  • Prune heavily in late winter to balance vigor and fruiting
  • Train on a trellis or wire system to optimize sunlight and airflow
  • Water regularly during dry spells in bloom and fruiting periods
  • Apply mulch to conserve soil moisture and minimize weeds
  • Monitor for mildew and cane borers in humid conditions

Why Choose Frontenac Grape

  • Exceptionally cold-hardy and disease-resistant
  • Produces deeply pigmented grapes for winemaking
  • Thrives in regions too cold for most vinifera varieties
  • Strong ornamental appeal with seasonal color
  • A dependable and productive focal point for northern vineyards

Frontenac Grape offers both hardiness and high-quality fruit, making it a top choice for cold-climate growers and home winemakers seeking a resilient focal point vine with rich, flavorful returns.
