Overcup Oak (Quercus lyrata)

Overcup Oak (Quercus lyrata), also known as Swamp Post Oak or Water White Oak, is a durable, flood-tolerant deciduous tree native to the southeastern and central United States. Its name comes from the acorns cup, which nearly encloses the nut. This species is ideal for challenging wet sites and brings strong structure, seasonal interest, and ecological value to large landscapes and restoration areas.

Distinctive Features

Overcup Oak grows 40 to 60 feet tall with a broad, rounded crown and stout branches. Its leathery, dark green leaves have deep, irregular lobes and turn yellow-brown to coppery in fall. The tree is most recognizable by its acorns, which are almost entirely enclosed in a thick, fringed cup. Bark is gray and develops ridges and scaly plates as the tree matures. Its strong wood and tolerance to poorly drained soils make it a dependable choice for floodplains and low-lying areas.

Growing Conditions

  • Sun Exposure: Full sun
  • Soil Type: Clay, loam, or sandy soils; tolerates poor drainage
  • Soil pH: Acidic to neutral
  • Water Needs: Moderate to high; tolerates seasonal flooding
  • USDA Hardiness Zones: 5 to 9

Ideal Uses

  • Floodplain restoration and wetland reforestation
  • Focal point tree for large, low-lying properties
  • Shade tree in parks and naturalized areas
  • Stormwater management or rain garden plantings
  • Wildlife habitat for birds and mammals

Low Maintenance Care

  • Minimal pruning needed to maintain natural form
  • Mulch during establishment to retain moisture and protect roots
  • Water consistently in the first two to three years
  • Monitor drainage in compacted urban soils
  • Rarely suffers from major pest or disease issues

Why Choose Overcup Oak

  • Thrives in wet, flood-prone areas where few trees succeed
  • Unique acorns add ornamental and ecological interest
  • Provides long-lasting shade with a sturdy, symmetrical form
  • Valuable habitat and food source for wildlife
  • A rugged, attractive focal point for water-managed landscapes

Overcup Oak stands out for its resilience, unique fruiting habit, and adaptability to saturated soilsmaking it an excellent focal point in wetland edges, rain gardens, or lowland restoration projects.
