Bishop's Balls
Gomphocarpus physocarpus, commonly known as Balloon Plant, Bishop's Balls, or Swan Plant, is a fascinating species of milkweed native to Africa and Asia. This herbaceous perennial is cultivated for its unique balloon-shaped seed pods and attractive foliage. The plant typically grows upright, reaching heights of up to 1 to 2 meters (3 to 6 feet). Its leaves are lance-shaped and arranged spirally along the stem. In summer, Gomphocarpus physocarpus produces clusters of small, white or pink flowers that are highly attractive to pollinators like butterflies and bees. However, its most distinctive feature is its inflated seed pods, which resemble balloons and contain seeds with silky hairs. These pods add visual interest to the plant and are often used in dried floral arrangements. Gomphocarpus physocarpus is also a larval host plant for monarch butterflies, making it a valuable addition to butterfly gardens and natural landscapes.
