Hackberry
The Hackberry (Celtis occidentalis) is a large deciduous tree native to North America. It is known for its hardy nature, adaptability, and attractive features. The Hackberry tree typically grows to a height of 40 to 60 feet, with a spread of 30 to 50 feet, forming a rounded crown with a sturdy trunk. Its leaves are simple, alternate, and serrated, with a vibrant green color that turns to yellow in the fall, providing a stunning display of autumn foliage. The tree produces small, inconspicuous flowers in the spring, followed by small, berry-like fruits that ripen to a dark purple color, which are a favorite food source for birds. Hackberry trees are resilient and can tolerate a wide range of soil conditions, including clay, sand, and alkaline soils, making them adaptable to various landscapes. They are also drought-tolerant and can withstand harsh urban environments, making them a popular choice for urban landscapes and street plantings. With its attractive foliage, wildlife value, and adaptability, the Hackberry tree is a versatile and valuable addition to any landscape.
