North Wind Switch Grass
North Wind Switch Grass (Panicum virgatum 'North Wind') is a hardy and upright ornamental grass highly valued for its durability and striking appearance. As a cultivar of the native Panicum virgatum, or switchgrass, 'North Wind' forms sturdy clumps of deep green foliage that transition to a beautiful golden-yellow in the fall. The rigid stems remain upright even during heavy rains and snow, providing a strong architectural presence in the landscape. During late summer to early fall, airy panicles emerge, starting with a reddish tint that later transforms into a lovely wheat color. This grass typically reaches a height of about four to five feet, making it an excellent choice for creating visual interest at the back of borders, in meadow plantings, or as a focal point in the garden. 'North Wind' switchgrass is adaptable to a variety of soil types, including clay and sandy soils, and is both drought and salt tolerant, further adding to its appeal in garden designs.
