Black Mondo Grass
Black Mondo Grass (Ophiopogon planiscapus 'Nigrescens') is a unique and captivating perennial ornamental grass known for its striking dark, almost black, foliage. This grass, although referred to as "grass," is actually a member of the asparagus family. Originating from East Asia, particularly Japan, it forms dense tufts of arching, strap-like leaves that are almost ebony in color. The contrast it provides in gardens, especially when planted en masse or as a border, is dramatic. In summer, small bell-shaped pink to light purple flowers emerge on short stems, adding a subtle ornamental element. Black Mondo Grass is often used as a ground cover or edging plant, providing a dark, contrasting backdrop for other plants. It thrives in well-drained soil and can adapt to a variety of light conditions, from full sun to partial shade. Its low maintenance needs and exceptional ornamental value make it a popular choice for modern landscape designs and container gardening.
