Dawyck Purple Beech
The Dawyck Purple Beech (Fagus sylvatica 'Dawyck Purple') is a striking deciduous tree known for its tall, slender columnar shape and deep purple foliage. It is a cultivated variety of the European beech tree, Fagus sylvatica. The tree can reach a height of about 40 to 60 feet, with a narrow spread of only 10 to 15 feet, making it an excellent choice for compact spaces or vertical accents in landscapes. The leaves of the Dawyck Purple Beech emerge a glossy purple color in spring, gradually maturing to a deep bronze-purple throughout the summer. In autumn, the foliage often transitions to shades of copper and gold before dropping. The upright growth habit of this beech cultivar creates a striking visual impact, especially when planted in rows or as a focal point in the garden. The Dawyck Purple Beech prefers full sun to partial shade and well-drained soil. It is relatively low-maintenance and tolerant of a wide range of soil conditions. With its dramatic height, narrow form, and rich purple foliage, the Dawyck Purple Beech adds elegance and beauty to any landscape or garden setting.
