Creek Sedge
Creek Sedge (Carex amphibola) is a species of sedge plant native to North America. This versatile perennial grass-like plant is well-adapted to moist and shady environments, making it a common sight in stream banks, wetlands, and wooded areas. Creek Sedge forms dense clumps of arching, narrow leaves that can reach a height of about 12 to 18 inches. The leaves have a rich green color and add texture and interest to the landscape. In late spring to early summer, Creek Sedge produces inconspicuous greenish-brown flowers on slender spikes that rise above the foliage. While the flowers may not be showy, they contribute to the plant's ecological significance, attracting various pollinators and providing habitat for wildlife. Due to its adaptability to moist conditions, Creek Sedge is often used for erosion control along creek banks and in rain gardens. Additionally, it can thrive in well-drained soils, making it suitable for naturalized areas, woodland gardens, and shade gardens. This low-maintenance sedge requires little attention once established, and its dense growth habit helps suppress weed competition. Creek Sedge is an excellent choice for gardeners seeking a native plant that contributes to the ecological balance while adding an element of natural beauty to their landscapes.
