Rosebay Rhododendron (Rhododendron maximum)

Rosebay Rhododendron (Rhododendron maximum), also known as Great Laurel or American Rhododendron, is a broadleaf evergreen shrub native to the Appalachian Mountains and Eastern U.S. woodlands. Known for its dense growth, leathery foliage, and showy late-spring blooms, this species brings year-round interest and habitat value to shaded landscapes.

Distinctive Features

Typically growing 8 to 15 feet tall and wide, Rosebay Rhododendron forms a dense, multi-stemmed mass of dark green, leathery leaves. In late June to early July, it produces clusters of bell-shaped white to pale pink flowers speckled with green or yellow markings. Its evergreen foliage and multi-season structure make it a staple in naturalized or woodland plantings. Bark is smooth and light gray on young stems, becoming slightly rough with age.

Growing Conditions

  • Sun Exposure: Partial shade to full shade
  • Soil Type: Moist, well-drained, humus-rich soil
  • Soil pH: Acidic
  • Water Needs: Moderate; prefers consistent moisture
  • USDA Hardiness Zones: 4 to 8

Ideal Uses

  • Focal point in shaded woodland or native plant gardens
  • Evergreen screen or privacy barrier in part shade
  • Understory planting beneath high-canopy trees
  • Mixed borders with other acid-loving evergreens
  • Habitat gardens for birds and pollinators

Low Maintenance Care

  • Mulch annually to retain moisture and enrich soil
  • Water during dry periods, especially in summer
  • Prune only to remove deadwood or shape lightly after bloom
  • Avoid heavy pruning into old wood
  • Maintain soil acidity with pine mulch or sulfur amendments

Why Choose Rosebay Rhododendron

  • Excellent for shady, acidic sites where few plants thrive
  • Provides dense cover and nesting habitat for birds
