American Hophornbeam
The American Hophornbeam (Ostrya virginiana) is a deciduous tree native to eastern North America. It's commonly known as "ironwood" due to its hard, dense wood. The tree typically grows in a pyramidal or oval shape and reaches a height of 30 to 50 feet. The leaves are alternate, serrated, and resemble those of the hornbeam tree, hence the name "hophornbeam." In fall, the leaves turn a beautiful mix of yellow, orange, and red. The bark is thin, smooth, and gray, resembling that of a muscle, which contributes to its nickname "musclewood." The American Hophornbeam produces small, inconspicuous flowers in spring and female catkins in summer, followed by small, papery, hop-like fruits. This tree is valued for its durability, adaptability, and its ability to attract various wildlife, making it a desirable choice for both ornamental and conservation purposes.
