Japanese Andromeda (Pieris japonica)

Pieris japonica, also known as Japanese Andromeda or Lily-of-the-Valley Shrub, is a broadleaf evergreen admired for its cascading spring flowers, colorful new foliage, and year-round structure. Native to mountain forests of Japan and East Asia, this refined shrub adds elegance to shaded landscapes and thrives in acidic soils alongside rhododendrons and azaleas.

Distinctive Features

In early spring, Pieris japonica produces pendulous racemes of bell-shaped flowers, typically white or blush-pink, reminiscent of lily-of-the-valley. New foliage often emerges in shades of red, bronze, or copper before maturing to deep green. With a naturally dense, layered form, it can reach 6 to 10 feet tall and wide, though many cultivars remain much smaller. Its evergreen leaves, arching stems, and seasonal color changes provide year-round appeal.
