Title:
The Scarlet Oak (Quercus coccinea) is a deciduous tree native to eastern North America. It is a medium to large-sized tree that can reach heights of 70 to 90 feet and has a spread of 40 to 50 feet. The tree has an upright, rounded crown and develops a strong, sturdy trunk. The leaves of the Scarlet Oak are deeply lobed with pointed, bristle-tipped lobes. They are a vibrant green color in the summer and turn a brilliant scarlet-red in the fall, hence the name "Scarlet Oak." The tree produces small acorns that serve as a food source for wildlife, including birds and mammals. The bark of the Scarlet Oak is dark gray and develops deep furrows and ridges with age. Scarlet Oaks are known for their adaptability to various soil types, including clay, loam, and sandy soils. They prefer full sun exposure and are tolerant of drought conditions once established. Scarlet Oaks are commonly planted as ornamental shade trees in parks, gardens, and larger landscapes due to their attractive foliage and fall color. They also provide habitat and food for wildlife.
