Overcup Oak
The Overcup Oak (Quercus lyrata) is a large deciduous tree native to the eastern and southeastern parts of the United States. It typically grows to a height of 60 to 80 feet with a spread of 40 to 60 feet. The tree has a rounded crown and a straight, sturdy trunk. The leaves of the Overcup Oak are leathery, simple, and lobed with rounded lobes that resemble a lyre, giving the tree its specific name. The leaves are dark green in color and turn yellow or reddish-brown in the fall. The bark of the tree is light gray to brown with shallow furrows and ridges. Overcup Oaks produce acorns that are completely enclosed by a deep, scaly cup, hence the name "Overcup." The acorns are an important food source for wildlife, including birds, squirrels, and deer. This oak species prefers moist to wet soil conditions and is often found in bottomland forests, floodplains, and along streams. It tolerates both full sun and partial shade. Overcup Oaks are valued for their attractive foliage, unique acorns, and their ability to tolerate wetter soil conditions compared to many other oak species. They are often planted in large landscapes, parks, and naturalized areas where they can provide shade and wildlife habitat.
