Aquilegia
Aquilegia, commonly called columbine, lights up spring with nodding, spurred flowers that attract hummingbirds and bees. Lacy foliage emerges early, then often rests in summer heat, especially in warmer zones. Plants thrive in morning sun to part shade and well-drained soil with steady moisture in spring. Deadhead to extend bloom or leave some seed heads for gentle self-sown drifts. Compact types edge paths and containers; taller selections weave through ferns and late perennials in woodland and cottage borders. Use a distinctive bicolor as a small focal point near a path or seating area. Cut stems last well in arrangements, and many varieties show good deer resistance.
